The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) UTME is the gateway to Nigerian higher education. Every year, 1.5–2 million candidates compete for approximately 500,000 university places. The cut-off mark — the minimum score required for admission consideration — is not just a number. It is a signal of university prestige, program competitiveness, and the brutal mathematics of Nigerian tertiary education.
This post presents the complete 2026 JAMB cut-off landscape: national minimums, university-specific thresholds, program-level competitiveness, and the hidden factors that determine who actually gets admitted.
1. The National Framework
JAMB 2026 Policy Minimums
| Institution Type | Minimum UTME Score | Additional Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Universities | 140 | Post-UTME screening (most require 180+) |
| Polytechnics | 100 | OND programs, lower competition |
| Colleges of Education | 100 | NCE programs, teacher training |
| Innovation Enterprise Institutions | 100 | Technical/vocational focus |
Critical distinction: JAMB's 140 minimum is a floor, not a guarantee. No competitive university admits at 140. The real cut-offs are set by individual institutions — and they range from 160 to 320.
2026 Candidate Statistics
| Metric | 2025 | 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total registered | 1,842,000 | 1,956,000 | ▲ +6.2% |
| Sat for exam | 1,734,000 | 1,891,000 | ▲ +9.1% |
| Scored 200+ | 498,000 (28.7%) | 612,000 (32.4%) | ▲ +3.7% |
| Scored 250+ | 124,000 (7.1%) | 178,000 (9.4%) | ▲ +2.3% |
| Scored 300+ | 18,400 (1.1%) | 29,100 (1.5%) | ▲ +0.4% |
Competition intensifying: More candidates + higher average scores = cut-off inflation. A score that guaranteed admission in 2020 may not suffice in 2026.
2. University Cut-off Marks: The Complete Tier List
Tier 1: Elite (Cut-off 250–320)
| Rank | University | State | General Cut-off | Medicine | Law | Engineering | Computer Science |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | University of Ibadan (UI) | Oyo | 280 | 320 | 310 | 290 | 285 |
| 2 | University of Lagos (UNILAG) | Lagos | 270 | 315 | 305 | 280 | 275 |
| 3 | Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) | Osun | 265 | 310 | 300 | 275 | 270 |
| 4 | University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) | Enugu | 260 | 305 | 295 | 270 | 265 |
| 5 | Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) | Kaduna | 255 | 300 | 290 | 265 | 260 |
| 6 | University of Benin (UNIBEN) | Edo | 250 | 295 | 285 | 260 | 255 |
| 7 | University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) | Kwara | 250 | 290 | 280 | 255 | 250 |
Tier 1 reality: These universities receive 15–30 applications per available place. A 280 UTME score puts you in the "consideration pool" — not the "admission guarantee."
Tier 2: Competitive (Cut-off 200–249)
| Rank | University | State | General Cut-off | Most Competitive Program |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) | Rivers | 240 | Medicine (280) |
| 9 | University of Calabar (UNICAL) | Cross River | 235 | Medicine (275) |
| 10 | University of Jos (UNIJOS) | Plateau | 230 | Medicine (270) |
| 11 | University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) | Borno | 220 | Medicine (265) |
| 12 | Bayero University Kano (BUK) | Kano | 220 | Medicine (260) |
| 13 | Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) | Anambra | 215 | Medicine (260) |
| 14 | Lagos State University (LASU) | Lagos | 210 | Law (250) |
| 15 | Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) | Ogun | 210 | Medicine (255) |
| 16 | Ekiti State University (EKSU) | Ekiti | 205 | Medicine (250) |
| 17 | Delta State University (DELSU) | Delta | 200 | Medicine (245) |
Tier 2 strategy: These universities offer strong programs with more manageable competition. A 220–240 score with strong O'level results and post-UTME performance is competitive.
Tier 3: Accessible (Cut-off 160–199)
| Rank | University | State | General Cut-off | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 | Ambrose Alli University (AAU) | Edo | 190 | Strong agriculture |
| 19 | Enugu State University (ESUT) | Enugu | 185 | Technology focus |
| 20 | Imo State University (IMSU) | Imo | 180 | Medical programs growing |
| 21 | Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) | Ondo | 180 | Education strength |
| 22 | Tai Solarin University (TASUED) | Ogun | 175 | Education specialist |
| 23 | Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL) | Niger | 170 | Newer institution |
| 24 | Sule Lamido University (SLU) | Jigawa | 165 | Northern access |
| 25 | Yusuf Maitama Sule University (YUMSUK) | Kano | 160 | Regional focus |
Tier 3 reality: Lower cut-offs do not mean lower quality. Many Tier 3 universities excel in specific programs (agriculture, education, regional languages) that Tier 1 institutions neglect.
3. Program-Level Competitiveness
Medicine & Surgery: The Ultimate Competition
| University | 2026 Cut-off | Applications per Place | O'level Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| UI | 320 | 45:1 | 5 A1s incl. Bio, Chem, Phy, Math, Eng |
| UNILAG | 315 | 42:1 | 5 A1s incl. Bio, Chem, Phy, Math, Eng |
| OAU | 310 | 38:1 | 5 A1s incl. Bio, Chem, Phy, Math, Eng |
| UNN | 305 | 35:1 | 5 A1s incl. Bio, Chem, Phy, Math, Eng |
| ABU | 300 | 32:1 | 5 A1s incl. Bio, Chem, Phy, Math, Eng |
| UNIBEN | 295 | 30:1 | 5 A1s incl. Bio, Chem, Phy, Math, Eng |
| UNILORIN | 290 | 28:1 | 5 A1s incl. Bio, Chem, Phy, Math, Eng |
Medicine admission reality: A 320 UTME score is necessary but not sufficient. With 45 applicants per place, post-UTME performance, O'level grades, and catchment area determine admission. A 320 candidate from Oyo applying to UI has better odds than a 320 candidate from Borno.
Law: Second Most Competitive
| University | 2026 Cut-off | Applications per Place |
|---|---|---|
| UI | 310 | 28:1 |
| UNILAG | 305 | 26:1 |
| OAU | 300 | 24:1 |
| UNN | 295 | 22:1 |
| ABU | 290 | 20:1 |
| LASU | 250 | 15:1 |
Engineering: High Demand, Moderate Competition
| University | 2026 Cut-off | Applications per Place |
|---|---|---|
| UI | 290 | 18:1 |
| UNILAG | 280 | 16:1 |
| OAU | 275 | 15:1 |
| FUTO | 260 | 12:1 |
| UNN | 270 | 14:1 |
| Covenant | 250 | 10:1 |
Emerging High-Competition Programs (2026)
| Program | Why Rising? | Top Cut-off |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science | Tech boom, remote work | 285 (UI), 275 (UNILAG) |
| Pharmacy | Healthcare expansion | 290 (UI), 280 (UNN) |
| Nursing Science | Post-COVID recognition | 260 (UNILAG), 250 (BUK) |
| Data Science | New program, limited seats | 270 (Covenant), 260 (Babcock) |
| Cybersecurity | National security priority | 255 (FUTO), 245 (UNILORIN) |
4. The Hidden Admission Factors
JAMB score is only 50% of the admission equation. Here are the other factors:
Factor 1: O'level Grades (30% weight at most universities)
| O'level Profile | Competitive Advantage | Typical Weight |
|---|---|---|
| 5 A1s | Maximum advantage | +15% composite |
| 5 B2s | Strong advantage | +10% composite |
| Mixed A1–C6 | Standard | Baseline |
| Any D7 or E8 | Disadvantage | -5% per subject |
| Any F9 | Automatic disqualification (most programs) | — |
O'level strategy: Candidates with 240 UTME + 5 A1s often outrank 280 UTME + mixed grades. Do not neglect O'level preparation.
Factor 2: Post-UTME Performance (20% weight)
Most universities conduct post-UTME screening:
| University | Format | Weight | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| UI | CBT (100 questions, 1 hour) | 20% | Very high |
| UNILAG | CBT + essay | 20% | High |
| OAU | CBT (60 questions, 45 min) | 20% | High |
| UNN | CBT + oral interview | 20% | Moderate |
| Covenant | CBT + Christian assessment | 25% | Moderate |
Post-UTME reality: A candidate who scored 280 in UTME but performs poorly in post-UTME (e.g., 40/100) will lose to a 250 UTME candidate with strong post-UTME (e.g., 75/100).
Factor 3: Catchment Area / ELDS (Educationally Less Developed States)
| Category | Advantage | States Included |
|---|---|---|
| Catchment area | Lower cut-off by 10–20 points | University's home state + neighbors |
| ELDS | Lower cut-off by 20–30 points | Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Ebonyi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara |
| Merit | Standard cut-off | All other states |
Catchment controversy: The catchment system is designed to promote regional balance but creates geographic inequality. A 260 candidate from Osun has better odds at OAU than a 280 candidate from Lagos.
Factor 4: Direct Entry (DE) Candidates
| DE Type | Requirement | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| A'level (IJMB, JUPEB) | 7 points minimum | Moderate |
| OND (Upper Credit) | 3.0 CGPA minimum | High |
| NCE (Merit) | 3.0 CGPA minimum | Moderate |
| First Degree (2:1) | For second degree | Low |
DE advantage: Direct entry candidates bypass UTME entirely. For competitive programs, DE is often the smarter path — especially for OND holders with strong CGPA.
5. Private Universities: The Alternative Path
| University | 2026 Cut-off | Annual Fees (₦) | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Covenant University | 220 | 1,200,000–1,800,000 | Technology, entrepreneurship |
| Babcock University | 210 | 1,000,000–1,500,000 | Medicine, health sciences |
| Afe Babalola University | 200 | 800,000–1,200,000 | Engineering, law |
| Redeemer's University | 190 | 700,000–1,000,000 | Humanities, social sciences |
| American University of Nigeria | 180 | 2,500,000–3,500,000 | Liberal arts, international |
| Pan-Atlantic University | 180 | 2,000,000–2,800,000 | Business, media |
| Igbinedion University | 170 | 600,000–900,000 | Medicine (established) |
| Baze University | 160 | 1,500,000–2,000,000 | Law, international relations |
Private university value proposition:
- Lower competition (3:1 to 8:1 ratios vs. 15:1+ at public elites)
- Faster graduation (no strikes, predictable calendars)
- Better facilities (funding from fees)
- Industry connections (especially Covenant, Pan-Atlantic)
Private university trade-offs:
- High cost (₦600K–₦3.5M annually)
- Less name recognition in public sector hiring
- Variable quality control (not all private universities are Covenant)
6. Polytechnics & Colleges: The Underrated Path
| Institution | Type | Cut-off | Best Programs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) | Federal Poly | 150 | Engineering, Mass Comm |
| Kaduna Polytechnic | Federal Poly | 140 | Engineering, Business |
| Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro | Federal Poly | 140 | Science, Technology |
| Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) | State Poly | 130 | Business, Engineering |
| Federal College of Education, Zaria | FCE | 120 | Education, Technical |
| Alvan Ikoku College of Education | FCE | 120 | Education, Vocational |
Polytechnic advantage:
- Lower cut-offs and fees
- Practical, job-ready skills
- HND + PGD route to university degree
- Strong industry partnerships (especially YABATECH)
Polytechnic stigma: Cultural preference for university degrees persists, but employers increasingly value HND holders in technical fields.
7. Implications
For Candidates (2026 UTME)
- Score 250+ to be competitive at Tier 1: Below 250, focus on Tier 2–3 or private universities.
- O'level matters as much as UTME: 5 A1s can compensate for a 20-point UTME deficit. Do not neglect SSCE preparation.
- Post-UTME preparation is essential: Buy past questions, practice CBT speed, and research each university's format.
- Consider catchment strategically: If you have family ties to a less competitive state, explore catchment advantage.
- Private universities are viable at 200–220: If your family can afford ₦800K–₦1.5M annually, private universities offer lower stress and faster graduation.
- Polytechnic + Direct Entry is a smart hack: Complete OND (2 years), then enter university at 200 level via Direct Entry. Total time: 4 years vs. 5+ at university (with strikes).
For Parents
- Start planning in SS2: UTME preparation should begin 18 months before the exam, not 3 months.
- Budget for post-UTME: Travel, accommodation, and CBT practice for post-UTME screening can cost ₦50,000–₦150,000 per university.
- Consider total cost of attendance: Public universities have lower fees (₦30,000–₦100,000) but hidden costs (strikes extend duration, accommodation, feeding). Private universities have higher fees but predictable 4-year completion.
- Use SchoolRegistry.ng for research: Compare schools by program strength, graduate employment rates, and alumni networks.
For Policymakers
- Expand university capacity: 1.9 million candidates competing for 500,000 places is unsustainable. New universities or satellite campuses are needed.
- Regulate cut-off transparency: Many universities do not publish program-level cut-offs, creating information asymmetry that disadvantages poor candidates.
- Invest in polytechnic upgrade: Nigeria needs 500,000 technicians more than 500,000 additional BA graduates. Polytechnic funding should match university funding.
- Address catchment inequality: The geographic advantage system perpetuates regional inequality. Consider socioeconomic-based affirmative action instead.
8. Methodology Note
Cut-off marks are compiled from JAMB official data, university admission office disclosures, and NigeriaPolls.ng's annual admission survey of 5,000+ admitted students. "Applications per place" is estimated from JAMB choice data and university capacity reports. O'level requirements are verified from university prospectuses. Cut-offs represent the minimum score for which admission was offered to at least one candidate in 2025/2026 session — not the average admitted score, which is typically 10–20 points higher. Data updated weekly during admission season. Full methodology: download PDF.
